Sydney Court grants privacy order for family of Bondi Beach shooting suspect
A Sydney court granted a temporary order to protect the privacy and safety of the family of Naveed Akram, the 24-year-old accused of the December 14 Bondi Beach mass shooting. Akram faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder, for the attack on a Jewish festival that was Australia’s deadliest shooting since 1996. His legal team argued that his mother, brother, and sister need protection from public backlash, though the magistrate noted that his mother’s identity is already widely known. While the prosecution alleges Akram and his late father were inspired by the Islamic State but acted alone, major media outlets like News Corp Australia have signaled they may challenge the secrecy order in court next week.
